"JESUS ONLY"

Matthew 17:8

by Elder R. Y. Blalock

Peter, James and John had, here, seen Christ in His glory, talking with Moses and Elias.   They heard the voice of God speaking, saying, "This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him."   When they heard it, they fell on their faces and were sore afraid.   "And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid.   And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only."

To see "Jesus only", is the only hope of the world.   He is the only hope of a lost soul.

First, we must clear away the clouds, so that we can see "Jesus only".   If we could clear away the false teachings of this world, that are piled up around Jesus, so that you could see "Jesus only", what a glorious work that would be!

The devil and his followers hounded Jesus to the grave, and tried to hide Him there.   They still try to hide Him, and to keep men from seeing Him.

Satan perverts the truth and puts a veil of false teaching over Jesus Christ, so that men cannot see Him.   He blinds the heart and mind with a self-conceited idea, of doing some good works, to be saved.   He puts your own works and self-righteousness, with the grace of God, to save you, which hides Jesus as the only Savior.

O, that I could sweep from your minds, every thought of self-righteousness, works, baptism, or church membership, as an aid or means to salvation, and then, I might get you to look up and see "Jesus only".

Look up to him.   He is your only hope.   He says, "Come unto me".   He, alone, can save you.   Soul, if you are troubled today, look up and see "Jesus only".   He alone will give you rest.

A dear mother had lost a little child, and after its body had been buried, and she had returned home, she was sitting, on the doorstep, with her face buried in her hands, grieving because of the death of her child.   She sobbed out, "It is so dark!"   Playing nearby, her little girl heard her mother's cry, and running up, pulled her mother's hands apart, saying, "Mama look up!   It is light."   The mother did so, and was comforted.

Today, if you are in trouble, look up.   It is light.   Jesus is up there.   He has conquered death and the grave for you, so there is light above.

Second, notice the completeness of "Jesus only".   "For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.   And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power."   (Colossians 2:9,10)

Can you not trust such a complete Savior?   Why not now?   It is now or never.   Time is fleeting by.   You will soon pass into eternity.   If you do not look up and see Jesus now, it will be too late then.   He calls you now, "Come unto me, and I will give you rest."   "The spirit and the Bride say, Come."

The Spirit knocks at your heart.   He has often knocked before.   Will you turn Him away?   It may be the last time.

You may be like the man, who was going up in a balloon, who lost his reason, and commenced cutting the cords that held him.   A vast throng of people, looking on, saw what he was doing, and they called to him, not to do that, but to pull the rip cord.   He kept on cutting away until he was hanging by only one cord, then, as his own mother called to him, he came to himself, and pulling the rip cord, letting the balloon descend to the ground.

O soul, will you hear the call of your friends, or your mother?   It may be your last chance.   Will you sever that last cord, that holds you from eternal death?   "Turn ye, turn ye, for why will ye die?"

     A poet has once said:

"The world can never give
The bliss for which we sigh.
"Tis not the whole of life to live
Nor all of death to die.
Beyond this veil of tears,
     There is a life above;
Unmeasured by the flight of years,
And all that life is love.

Soul, if you would have that life of love, look up and see "Jesus only".   "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."   John 3:16.

Let us plead with you to accept Jesus now.

"There is a death whose pangs
     Outlast the fleeting breath.
Oh!   What eternal horrors hang
     Around the second death!"

I plead with you, lost soul, to look to Jesus before it is too late.   This may be your last chance.   It may be my last message.   So I plead with you in words of a song:   "Sinner, dear sinner, why do you delay?   Come to the Savior, O come while you may.   Turn from your folly, for mercy now pray, or you may be too late."    "Why do you linger?   Time's flying so fast.   Soon your last moments of earth will be past, Then from His presence your soul will be cast, For you will be too late."    May God help you to come now before it is too late.   Amen.
