There was angry shouting that day in the great Buddhist temple in Nara, angry shouting such as the young disciples had never heard before. The head "bozu" or priest was greatly disturbed. His family had sent, into the monastery, a young nephew of his in order to make a priest out of him. The boy, however, had set the monastery in a turmoil. He was a Christian, he told them. He believed in Jesus, who was God's Son come into this world that we might know the One True God. Jesus had died for man's sins on a cross, was buried, arose the third day and ascended to heaven, and now He freely forgives the sins of all who come and put their trust in Him.
The young man declared emphatically that he had trusted Jesus, been born again and now had eternal life. He was not afraid of what they might do to him. He warned his uncle that unless he, too, repented and trusted in this same Jesus he would spend an eternity in the fires of hell.
Oh, What heresy! The old abbot fairly roared with anger. "Out!" he cried, "Out with you, and don't you ever come back here again."
Such was the experience of young Fuji Kun, when forsaken by all his family he was now thrust out into the world to find his own way, however he had the very best Friend in all the world to comfort and to cheer him. Life was hard, but he found that there was help and victory in Jesus.
With the aid of Christian friends Fuji Kun was able to continue his schooling and afterwards to prepare for the ministry to which he felt the Lord had called him. A few years later he was blessed in the joyful opportunity of going to America to attend Bible school, and there he met and made many new friends; but he was never satisfied until he was back in Japan preaching Christ to the multitudes there who had never known Him.
After a time Mr. Fuji was settled in a town on the Kanto Plains, preaching in his own Gospel Hall and many places round about. As a Christian he took a new name: "Daniel," the brave and the trusting. He was now married to a fine woman who was a talented musician as well as a true Christian helpmate, one who happily served the Lord.
God gave the Fujis a little boy, who was a joy to their home. They felt they were blessed in their work and blessed in their home, though they could not avoid much opposition because they worked in the midst of many Buddhist sects that united in a common enmity for the Christian faith.
One day when the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fuji was about six years old he chased a ball out of the yard into the street and was struck by a car. Shortly after his parents arrived with him at the hospital, he died from his injuries. God had taken him. Father and mother were in great grief. Their one and only child was gone. But their friends and neighbors were surprised to find that in their grief they also had great joy and consolation. They new they could not bring their little boy back, but according to God's Word they could go to him.
Mr. Fuji obtained the use of a large army chapel for the funeral of their son and asked a pastor friend, whom he knew would deliver a real gospel message from God's Word, to preach the funeral. He let all his relatives know of the funeral, and although they were strong Buddhists, out of respect for the dead most of them came. This was his desire, for above all else he wanted his family and relatives hear about his Master, this wonderful Jesus.
After the funeral the Fujis went back to their work, lonely now, but trusting Jesus day by day. One day Mr. Fuji looked out his window and saw a man approaching the house whom he knew to be a leader of the Soka Gakkai, a very militant Buddhist sect in that town. He knew just what the man would be saying to him. They were known for going into any bereaved home and trying to convert the family by saying, "If only you had been in our organization this calamity would not have happened to you." They promised prosperity, power, good health and long life to all their followers. Mr. Fuji quickly prayed, asking the Lord to help him answer this man.
The visitor came in, and after he sat down he said, "I hear that you have lost your little boy."
"No we haven't lost our little boy," said Mr. Fuji. "The Lord Jesus just called him up to heaven. And when you think of it, he is far better off there. You know, There,s nothing wicked in heaven, only joy and happiness all the time. He is with the Lord Jesus, who loves all the little children, as the Bible says, who loved us all so much that He shed His precious blood for our sins and died for us on an awful cross and then arose again to let us know that He is greater than death."
"When we think how. if our boy had grown up here, he would have had to meet with many evil people and might himself have become a no account ruffian, we are thankful to God that He took him. But. no! We haven't lost our little boy. He has just gone on ahead of us to the beautiful home that Jesus has prepared for us. This Bible tells us about it. So, when we get done with our work here in this world, we're going to that home, and we shall see our boy again. Don't you think that is wonderful? We can't lose a child or loved one when they have trusted in Jesus."
The leader of the Soka Gakkai slowly got to his feet, and without saying one more word walked out the door. He had no answer, nothing to say, for there was nothing in his teachings that was near as good as what Mr. Fuji had in his Jesus Christ.
After a few years God gave Mr. and Mrs. Fuji another child, and now they are happy to tell everyone that they have two children. One is here, and the other is waiting in heaven. So they continue to carry the gospel to the people of Japan, knowing that in everything they meet with on the way that there is victory in Jesus.
This is a true story, Brother and Sister Daniel Fuji were our friends when we were in Japan, I was the one who preached the funeral of their son. I can promise you, dear reader, if you have a burden or find life's trials hard to bear, this same Jesus can give you joy and victory whenever you kneel and talk to Him.
