![]() A STORY I HEARD MY GRANDFATHER TELLby R. Y. Blalockof Concord, CaliforniaI was raised in an old fashioned Southern home. My father and mother were of Revolutionary stock, who had helped to win America's freedom, fighting under General Washington. As a boy of ten I loved to sit and listen to my grandfather, who was 85 years old tell stories of his father's experience in the Revolutionary War. I remember him telling of an incident where an American regiment was in a hopeless situation, and saw no way to escape being slaughtered by their enemy who were encamped near by. These American soldiers were men who trusted in God. Many of them had fled from England seeking a country where they could worship God according to the dictates of their conscience. That night when these men were encamped on the North side of a river they had just crossed in their retreat from their enemy, and at dark the English, in their pursuit after them, arrived in the bottom on the other side of the river and there pitched camp for the night. The Americans soon saw the light of their campfires spring up here and there, on the South of them. They knew then their enemies were upon them. To pull up their camps in the darkness and slip away was impossible as rough wooded hills sloped down to their camp, and to try to feel their way in the darkness through the rough mountain of rocks and bluffs meant sure death to many of them. It was a sultry August evening, and they were tired and weary, hardly able to go anyway. It looked as though it was death to move, and to wait was to be captured or death, and they had rather die than surrender. The old General said, "We will wait and trust the Lord." He soon slipped away to a clump of thick brush to pray; but someone was ahead of him, for when he drew near he heard a voice in the thicket of woods. He stopped and listened. He soon recognized the voice of their faithful chaplain, a young Welsh Baptist Minister. Such a prayer, he thought he never heard as he lifted them up to the throne of grace. He prayed for the men, for the Captains, for the General, and for their deliverance. The General fell on his knees and joined him in praying as he as he never had prayed before. He did not know how long he had been praying when he felt a hand touch his shoulder, and heard the voice of the Chaplain say, "It is all right now, General, God has heard our prayers." He arose, and as soon as he opened his eyes he saw in the west a flash of lightning and then heard the distant rumble of thunder. He and the Chaplain locked arms and walked back to their camps. They had not more than entered their tents until big drops of rain began to fall, and the roar and flashes of lightning in the mountain west of them at the head of the river impressed them with the thought that soon the river would be unfordable. Their enemy tired from their pursuit slept soundly, and but few of them awoke, and they thought it but a passing thunder shower that would soon be over. They made no effort to move, until the rushing waters of the river were out of the banks and running over the bottom land where they were camped. The storm raged and the rain poured until near daybreak. When the Americans arose in the morning the clouds were sinking in the East, and the sun burst out from under the dark clouds and smiled on them, as they looked across the bottom of a mile or more of turbid and muddy river, and saw their enemies, with most of their camp and supplies swept away standing at the foot hills. So they waved them a good by, and started over the mountains, and it was three days before Cornwallis and his army could cross the river. When he did cross it was to soon meet General Washington and his army, and to surrender. As I think of this story, I can imagine that old General heading his army as they wound their way up the mountain to victory, and I sing, In tattered garments clad," |
