Slaves in the Land of the Free

by James W. Black

It is a dreadful thing for mankind to be enslaved, and wear the yoke of bondage.   The United States of America were torn asunder a few years ago over the slavery question and the result was a large measure of untold suffering and much blood was shed, and thousands of homes were wrecked, and wounds were inflicted that have not yet been healed in the hearts of many.   All this and more was the price paid for slavery.   The day of selling human beings in the open market as chattels is past, but yet America is a land of slavery.   Millions have become slaves to industrial and social advancement.   Though most of the people have been willing to become slaves to these masters it does not mitigate their suffering and shame in the least; these forms of slavery are a serious menace to the peace and welfare of this nation, and will eventually bring political and economic disaster to a freedom loving people.

There is a slavery greater than either of those mentioned above (for those kinds have been and may be corrected by the efforts of man).    Hundreds of millions of people in this land of the free are bound by fetters of the most deadly form of slavery that the human race has ever known, bound so securely that human efforts only make the slaves' condition more desperate.   Jesus said, "Verily, verily, I say unto you.   Whosoever committeth sin is the servant (slave) of sin," John 8:34.   "Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey his servants ye are whom ye obey, whether of sin unto death or obedience unto righteousness," Romans 6:16.   Wages are paid to, and received by, this class of slaves in this life.   "Be not deceived.   God is not mocked; for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.   For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption . . . " Galatians 6:7-8.   Wages are received at the end of the natural life also.   "The wages of sin is death," Romans 6:23.   "And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire.   This is the second death," Revelation 20:14.   Man is bound securely by the master SIN.   "His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his own sins,' Proverbs 5:22.   The slave under sin is truly helpless, but there is one who can and will release him from his slavery.   "For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly," Romans 5:6.   Jesus said, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken hearted, to preach DELIVERANCE TO THE CAPTIVES, and recovering of sight to the blind, to SET AT LIBERTY THEM THAT ARE BRUISED," Luke 4:18.   Truly "the wages of sin is death" but it is also true that "the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord," Romans 6:23.   You may be released from servitude or bondage of sin once for all.   "For God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life," John 3:16.   "But as many as received him to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name," John 1:12.   "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is a gift of God; Not of works, lest any man should boast," Ephesians 2:8-9.   "For he (God) hath made him (Christ) to be sin for us, who (Christ) knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him." 2 Corinthians 5:21.   The Lord Jesus "bore our sins in his own body on the tree."

Will you not trust in the only one who is able to release you from the slavery and fearful results of sin, even Jesus the Christ?   He now invites you to come to him for release and security.   "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest," Matthew 11:28.    Perhaps you ask how can I come to Christ?   We answer:   by faith in the Son of God.   You have been reading some of the Word, and more follows in this article.   "So then faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God," Romans 10:17.   Be like the publican, "And the publican standing afar off, would not lift up his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner," Luke 18:13.   "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved," Romans 10:13.   "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and though shalt be saved . . . " Acts 16:31.   The word of faith is, "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God has raised him from the dead thou shalt be saved.   For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation," Romans 10:9-10.   Believe now FOR ETERNAL LIBERATION FROM THE SLAVERY AND PENALTY OF SIN.
