John 8:12. "I am the light of the world. He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.'
A famous lighthouse in England has written over the door at the entrance these words, 'TO GIVE LIGHT, AND TO SAVE LIFE". This is like Jesus, who came to be the LIGHT OF THE WORLD and to SEEK AND TO SAVE that which was lost. Jesus came to give light. "In him was life, and the life was the light of men." (John 1:4)
By His life, Jesus enlightens mankind as to the true personality of God. There are some who read John 3:16 like this: "God so loved (Out of the world He loved the elect only. He hated the rest,) that He gave His only begotten Son that (only the elect can be saved, since His limited grace is extended only to them. All others have no hope.) believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
I've heard that a black preacher once said "It's amazing what light the scriptures do throw upon the commentaries." Whosoever may have said it told the truth. One thing, made very plain in God's Word, is that the love of Jesus is without dissimulation. He loved all men regardless. He wept over Jerusalem because they rejected Him. He healed ten lepers (Luke 17:12-19), but only one returned to thank Him. He healed the cripple at the pool of Siloam, but when the man found out who He was, he immediately told on Him to the authorities. (John 5:6-19) While He hung suffering upon the cross, He prayed for forgiveness for the wicked people who sent Him there. In every way, Jesus showed us the love of God, a love that the hard-hearted of this world find impossible to believe in.
A lady tourist stopped to talk to a woman who was sewing some beautiful material. "Do you live here?" she asked. "No," said the lady. "I live over the hill. Let me tell you what happened to me last night. As I was walking home, a panther followed me, but I was carrying a lantern, and was walking in the circle of light, so I was safe." "Do you mean the panther would not attack you while you were in the light?" "That's right."
Many years ago, a man who had been living a very wicked life, was wonderfully saved. His old friends all ridiculed him, but he said to them, "Do you know what I am? I am a lamplighter. I light the street lamps, then I turn them out late at night. As I turn them out, I look back behind, and all is darkness. That is my past life. As I look ahead, all is light. That is my future, light to guide me all the way, since I found the Lord Jesus. My path will be filled with light until I get to the end of the road." Proverbs 4:18 says, "But the path of the just is as a shining light that shineth more and more unto the perfect day." That perfect day will be here before long, when Jesus comes and we shall be like Him.
How is it with you, my friend? Is your heart full of light or full of darkness? If all is dark, let Jesus, THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD, come in and change your night into day.
