I believe the unspeakable gift of which Paul here speaks is the grace of Salvation in Christ Jesus. "The wages of sin is death, but the GIFT OF GOD is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23)
First, the saved person has tasted the IRRESISTIBLE BREAD. A TV advertisement for potato chips tried to make out that they were irresistible. "you can't eat just one," they claimed. In the picture a man tried to eat just one, then he could not restrain himself and began to grab more and more and more. This, of course, was not totally true in regard to potato chips, but it is true concerning the HEAVENLY MANNA.
The jews said to Jesus, "Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from Heaven to eat." (John 6:31) But Jesus explained, Moses gave you NOT that bread from heaven; but my Heavenly Father giveth you THE TRUE BREAD from heaven." And again (John 6:48-51) "I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness and are dead. This is the bread that cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat there of and not die. I AM THE LIVING BREAD, which came down from heaven. If any man eat of this bread, he shall live forever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world."
The writer of Psalms says, "O taste and see that the Lord is good." (Psalms 34:8) He wasn't talking about potato chips, my friend. He was talking about Christ, the wonderful BREAD FROM HEAVEN, and I'm sure that if you will only taste in heartfelt faith of the One whose body was broken on the cross for the life of the world, you will never stop tasting, for you will have found the true MANNA FROM HEAVEN Jesus Christ, the irresistible bread of life.
Jesus is also the IRRESISTIBLE LIVING WATER. He said to the woman of Samaria by the well of Sychar, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that sayeth to thee, Give me to drink: thou wouldst have asked of him, and he would have given thee LIVING WATER." (John 4:10) Again He said in verse 13, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again. But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst." Is that not an irresistible water? Just one drink, and you will never thirst again! Why? Because you will have a fountain of that living water inside you, an eternal supply of the water of life, and you'll constantly be drinking at that fountain.
In I Peter 2:3 Peter says, "If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious." In other words, if you have really tasted that the Lord is gracious, you'll be desiring more and more of the "sincere milk of the word." You will want to drink more and more, for you have found the fountain of the water of life.
Ponce de Leon, a Spanish explorer, hunted through Florida for a "fountain of youth," a water to give eternal life. He never found it, and he died, but if he had only known to look in God's Word he could have found it there. That fountain still flows free, and in the very last chapter of the Bible an urgent invitation is given (Revelation 22:17). "And the Spirit and the Bride say, COME. And let them that heareth say, COME. And let him that is athirst COME. And whosoever will, LET HIM TAKE OF THE WATER OF LIFE FREELY." Just one drink and you are "hooked," as they say forever.
Again, the saved person has seen an IRRESISTIBLE LOVE. Jesus said, "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me." (John 12:32)
It was for love that Jesus came from heaven to take upon Him the form of a man. It was for love that He suffered poverty here on earth. He always thought of others, and it was for love that He went to the cross, bearing our sins in his own body on the tree. "But God commendeth (or shows) His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8)
C. H. Spurgeon, the great English Baptist preacher, told the story of his conversion, which happened when he was 16 years old. He had started to his own church on a cold winter day, but because of the cold and snow he stopped instead at a smaller church nearer by. Only a few people were there, and their pastor never arrived. One of the lay members stood up to try to preach and took for his text Isaiah 45:22, "Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else." The man could find little to say about the text except that we should look to Jesus. He saw young Spurgeon sitting on a back seat and said, "Young man you seem to be miserable. Look, I tell you, look away to Jesus." Spurgeon said that right then he looked to Jesus, saw Him in His great love and grace as He died on the cross. "And," said he, "I've been looking ever sence." So it is with everyone who will only look and see the wonderous and IRRESISTIBLE LOVE of our Lord Jesus Christ.
And why, then, isn't everyone saved? Why isn't everyone drawn to the wonderful love of the Saviour? It is because they never get to taste, they never get to see Jesus. Paul in 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 tells us the reason for this. He says, "But if our gospel (the message of Jesus and His love) be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them."
The god of this world is, of course, Satan. The world worships and serves him instead of the God of heaven. The world has followed him in rebellion against the true God, and he blinds their minds that they may not desire to see or taste of the grace of God.
A preacher preaches the gospel, but how many minds does the Word get hold of, even of those in the congregation? Bobbie Burns, the great Scottish poet, once wrote a poem entitled, "To A Louse, On Seeing It On a Lady's Hat In Church." That's where the devil had taken his mind instead of on the sermon. This poem was widely acclaimed, but the author went on to drink himself to death at a very early age. The god of this world had blinded his mind to the gospel that was being preached
Today the devil is even more successful at blinding the minds of them that believe not. It used to be the movies. but now the movies are in every home. The whole family gathers around the alter to the god of this world.
But still the gospel is preached, and God's "unspeakable gift" is offered free. If a person would only take one look and really see the love of God as it is manifested in Jesus Christ, crowned with thorns, bleeding and dying on the cross of Calvary, and then behold the empty tomb with it's glorious message of a victorious Savior, risen and ascended to glory to be our advocate with the Father, interceding for every lost sinner who will come to God by Him. Just take one look at that Saviour and you will know you have found a friend you can depend on, who can hold you safe in His everlasting arms. Says Paul, "I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day." (2 Timothy 1:12)
Look to Jesus now, my friend. Look to Jesus and be saved.
