BITTERSWEET

If life's waters were never bitter,
If we never knew defeat,
If no man was our enemy,
Then would friendship seem so sweet?

Could we enjoy the fruits of victory
Of a battle never fought?
Could we learn to value friendship,
If all our favor sought?

So let the bitter waters come
We know they're bound to end,
And we'll place a higher value,
On the fellowship of friends.
